Plan a Plant Takeover

-

Not ready to pop up a grow tent in your living room? Here are a few tips for incorporating plants into any style of décor:

• Add floating shelves. You can create living art for your walls with a floating plant shelf. Install a grouping of shelves with staggered heights or a single shelf for drama. Stage the shelf using a mix of upright and trailing plants or add framed photos and decorative art objects.

• Use plants on bookshelves. Plants look great on a bookshelf, either mixed in with books or on their own. A plant trailing down from the top is pure beauty! If the back of the shelf is closed, don’t forget to rotate your plants to keep their growth even.

• Fill empty corners. Add a hanging grow light and dress a corner up with a statuesque floor plant! I have never met a monstera or bird of paradise plant that wasn’t ready for the spotlight!

• Utilize the empty space behind the sofa. Add a console table and, of course, plants. Add two decorative table lamps, swap out the bulbs for full-spectrum light bulbs, and you can choose any plant you want for that space.

• Forget fabric, hang a plant curtain at the window instead. Use a clothing rod, rather than a curtain rod. It comes farther out from the wall than a curtain rod, making more room to hang plants of different sizes. Add S hooks and hanging plant holders. Opt for macramé hangers for a boho vibe or minimal leather hangers for a clean, modern look.

• Decorate with foliage, not flowers. Use potted plants for your table centerpiece instead. They last longer, and if it’s color you want, there are plenty of colorful variegated plants. — KBH
