ELIZABETH STUEBING
1927-2015
Elizabeth Stuebing was born on February 27, 1927, in Peoria, Illinois, and died on November 19, 2015, in Houston, Texas. She was the only child of Hannah and Anthony Edwards. Betty graduated from Northwestern University, where she met her late husband, Robert Stuebing, to whom she was married from 1947 until his death in 1987.
Betty was active in political, educational, and religious programs and causes, from serving as co-chair of Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign in Connecticut to teaching at a school for children with Down’s Syndrome in Merida, Mexico. She earned a master’s degree in special education from Indiana University in 1970 and spent the remainder of her career teaching in Michigan City, Indiana, and LaGrange, Illinois. She moved to Houston after her husband’s death to be close to her beloved granddaughters. She did volunteer work for brain-damaged adults in suburban Chicago and, after moving to Texas, with the Houston Area Parkinson’s Association. She was an active member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Brad and Karla Stuebing of Houston and daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Jim Smyth of Hyde Park, New York, granddaughters Erika Lebling of Pawcatuck, Connecticut, and Andie Ten Have of Houston, their respective husbands, Tim Lebling and Ben Ten Have, greatgrandson Jude Lebling, and cousins Sally Stuebing Alcorn of Houston and Theo Kenyon of Peoria.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday November 23, 2015, in the Stratford Theater at The Buckingham, 8580 Woodway Drive, Houston, Texas 77063. After cremation, Betty’s remains will be interred at Mount Hope Cemetery in Chicago, next to those of her husband.
