No. 1 UNC takes a hard fall on the men’s side, but UT’s women avoid any pitfalls at Rice.
Brianna Taylor scored 19 points to lead 11thranked Texas past Rice 70-47 on Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Longhorns (3-0) outscored the Owls 14-2 in the third quarter.
Taylor was 8-of-11 from the field and had eight rebounds.
Shani Rainey scored 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting to lead Rice (0-3).

Courtney Walker scored 23 points, and Jordan Jones and Courtney Williams added 17 points apiece as the No. 12 Aggies controlled the last few minutes to edge the Horned Frogs at College Station.
TCU (3-1), off to its best start in four seasons, led for much of the game. It led 43-37 at halftime and by eight points early in the fourth quarter when Walker, who also had eight rebounds, scored five points in a 9-0 run to put Texas A&M (4-0) up 68-67 with 5:36 to play.
A layup by AJ Alix, who scored 25 points, put TCU up 74-70 with four minutes to go, but Walker scored four of A&M’s last six points. The Horned Frogs tied it with free throws, but the Aggies, who made their last six shots, pulled it out at the end. STANFORD 84 GEORGE WASHINGTON 63

Kayla Smith made the go-ahead basket with 34 seconds left, and Kendall Noble sealed the Hilltoppers’ upset victory over the 16th-ranked Cardinals at Bowling Green, Ky., with two free throws.
