Greenwood King Realtor hosts lecture in historic home

-

Greenwood King Properties’ agent Anne White hosted a buffet dinner and lecture by architectural historian Stephen Fox on Thursday evening, April 15, at the Tennant House, a historic home at 1505 North Boulevard in the Broadacres Historic District.

The invitation-only gathering mingled Realtors and other guests who came to hear Fox speak on the significance of the house’s architecture as well as the origins and importance of Broadacres neighborhood to the city.

“The tree-lined boulevards and sweeping lawns of Broadacres, as planned by architect William Ward Watkin in the 1920s, reflect the ‘garden city’ that Houston’s leading citizens wanted their city to become,” said Fox.

“The architect John F. Staub designed the Tennant House as an integral part of the neighborhood plan and it stands out among Staub’s many Broadacres residences as a rigorous example of his design practices.”

Completed in 1926-1927 for the Joseph A. Tennant family, the house has had only three owners.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Georgian-style residence’s location in a City of Houston Historic District protects it from inappropriate alterations or demolition.

The rear gardens, shaded by masses of Southern magnolia trees, heirloom live oaks, and jasmine-covered allées, were designed by Bryan landscape architect J. Allen Myers, Jr. to complement Staub’s classical design.

“The Tennant House is one of Houston’s architectural treasures,” said White, the home’s listing agent “It’s a privilege to celebrate it and help educate the Realtor community, neighbors, and preservationists on the significance of this house.”
