Cards beat slumping Pirates

PITTSBURGH — Carlos Martinez pitched into the ninth inning for his third consecutiv­e win, and Matt Holliday had a three-run homer among his three hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 on Saturday night.

The Cardinals won for the sixth time in seven games. Pittsburgh lost its fourth in a row.

Martinez (7-5) gave up one run and six hits in 81⁄3 innings before being lifted when the Pirates put runners on first and second with one out.

A CUBS8, BRAVES2: Jake Arrieta allowed only four hits in seven strong innings and, backed by four homers, made an impressive return to winning form as Chicago beat host Atlanta. The reigning NL Cy Young winner improved to 10-1.

A REDS2, ATHLETICS1: Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer off Daniel Mengden, who made his major league debut after a speedy rise through the minors, and host Cincinnati held on for a victory that sent Oakland to its seventh straight loss.

A GIANTS5, DODGERS4: Joe Panik hit a game-tying single off Los Angeles closer Kenley Jansen with one out in the 10th inning and scored on Buster Posey’s RBI single, and host San Francisco rallied for a walkoff victory.

A ROCKIES5, PADRES3: Charlie Blackmon hit a tiebreakin­g solo homer off the foul pole in the fifth, lifting host Colorado to a win over San Diego.

A BLUEJAYS11, ORIOLES6: Edwin Encarnacio­n hit two homers as Toronto handed visiting Baltimore its second straight defeat following a five-game winning streak.

A REDSOX15, TWINS4: Xander Bogaerts tacked four more hits on his majors-most total, including a two-run homer as Boston broke away late to win at Minnesota.

A ROYALS4, WHITESOX1: Cheslor Cuthbert hit a pair of solo homers, Danny Duffy pitched six shutout innings, and Kansas City won at Chicago to ended an eight-game skid.

A BREWERS7, METS4: Ryan Braun hit two home runs, starting pitcher Wily Peralta had another, and Milwaukee used five homers to beat visiting New York.

A NATIONALS8, PHILLIES 0: Tanner Roark pitched seven sharp innings and made a rare contributi­on with his bat to help host Washington beat Philadelph­ia.

A TIGERS6, YANKEES1: Ian Kinsler homered and drove in a career-high five runs, and Detroit’s Justin Verlander finally won in the new Yankee Stadium.
