Gerald Womack emphasizes revitalization of community

- By Rebecca Maitland

Gerald Womack, broker/owner of Womack Development and Investment Realtors, is not just a real estate agent assisting clients with their real estate goals.

He is a community activist, helping to shape, and revitalize his focus areas, which is the Third Ward/Riverside area and surrounding neighborhoods.

“I believe it is important to be involved in civic activities, which helps to improve the quality of life that relates to neighborhoods,” Womack said.

For example, Womack is on the board of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Houston; and also on the board for Houston First, which was established for tourism and helps make Houston a premier destination.

“There are panhandlers and homeless people in this area that need help. On many occasions, I have called for referrals for the needs of these homeless men and women.

“We just opened a new facility in the Fifth Ward that treats people on a short-term basis. This saves millions of dollars for hospitals. At the new facility, the homeless re- ceive treatment and then many are able to join society, which benefits all of Houston,” Womack said.

Womack also is working with Mayberry Homes, located at 4412 Almeda, which assists with revitalizing the area, building homes for firsttime buyers. Hot market

With Mayberry Homes, park renovations, a new school, new businesses and restaurants, and new construction of condos, townhouses and apartments, this area is not only see- ing a renaissance, it also has become a hot market with diverse residents.

“We also are in the rental market, which is very strong in this area. We are seeing a growing demand for high-end, high-rise apartments,” Womack said.

This resurgence of the area is helping to change the landscape of this once impoverished area where Womack grew up.

Womack obtained his real estate licenses at age 16, and today owns his own successful real estate firm. He has come a long way since growing up in the Third Ward, and now he is helping others and giving back. Community support

Womack also continues to be an advocate for underprivileged youth, affordable housing and first-time buyers, helping re-energizing the Third Ward and McGregor area.

“I love what I do and I love this city. I love working with people from all walks of life and in all price points.

“I never turn a client down. I want to help all have the dream of owning their own home,” Womack said.
