Authorities probe reported gun incident at Trump rally
Representatives of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s district attorney’s office will confer on what action, if any, to take against a man who reportedly brought a firearm to a parking garage near the site of Donald Trump’s Friday night rally in The Woodlands, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
Deputies initially handcuffed the man but later released him. The man, who was wearing a pro-Trump T-shirt, later told KPRC-TV that he had not been carrying a weapon and that his interception by officers was the result of confusion.
“Make America Great Again,” the man told the news station. “Trump is going to be our next president.” The man has not been identified by authorities.
“As far as the incident where the individual was detained, our instructions from the district attorney’s office are that it is still under investigation,” Capt. R.V. Silvio, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said Saturday.
Silvio declined to answer questions specifically about the man’s interaction with law enforcement officers.
The U.S. Secret Service, which provides security for the presumptive GOP nominee, had no record of anyone being taken into custody during the event.
“To my knowledge, the Secret Service made no arrests at the Trump campaign rally in Houston yesterday,” agency spokesman Rob Hoback said by email Saturday.
Requests for comment from Houston’s FBI office were not answered immediately.
Additional incidents that occurred at the Trump rally involving “multiple agencies” also are under investigation by law enforcement, Silvio said.
“We are waiting to assemble all the stats and details,” he added.
