HomeAid charity project furthers initiative to serve children in 2016
HomeAid Houston, a 501(c)(3) charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA), is furthering the 2016 initiative “Serving Children, Preserving Futures,” by teaming with Partners in Building in the construction of an 8,100-square-foot cottage for Boys and Girls Country located in Hockley. The new cottage will house eight children who come from families in crisis.
The children live with a married “teaching parent” and any children they may have, as well as two single teaching parents who raise these children as their own. HomeAid worked with Boys and Girls Country, identifying the agency’s need for a series of new cottages to enhance the Boys and Girls Country campus and Partners in Building was quick to come on board as the builder captain. This building has been named the Joanne H. Watford Cottage.
“Our collaboration with the professionals at Partners in Building on this cottage, gives us a tremendous advantage in achieving our goals for 2016,” said Cindy Hinson, president of HomeAid Houston. “This project launches our initiative for this year, and will be followed by several additional construction and remodeling projects for other children’s agencies.”
HomeAid and Partners in Building are also grateful for the generous donations of materials and labor by numerous companies. They include: Moen, BMC, Weyerhaeuser, JP Hart Lumber, Dupont Building Materials, James Hardie, ABC Supply, Builders 1st Source, Pro-Build and Sherwin-Williams Paint Co.
The Boys and Girls Country program is made up of a network of 11 cottage families and an extended Christian neighborhood that supports the children as they learn and grow, provides them with educational and emotional support, holds them accountable to their peers and the greater community, and encourages them to dream and achieve big goals. Education is also a priority and focus for the kids and staff.
“Our partnership with HomeAid Houston allows us to help provide a safe, nurturing environment for some very deserving kids at Boys and Girls Country,” said Jim Lemming, president and CEO of Partners in Building. “We are honored to be able provide our services and experience on this ambitious project.”
Boys and Girls Coun- try was established in 1971 as a 501(c)(3) notfor-profit charity whose mission is to change the lives of children from families in crisis by loving and nurturing them in a Christian home environment, raising them to become self-sustaining and contributing adults. Children are from the greater Houston area, which includes 13 counties.
Located 35 miles northwest of Houston, Boys and Girls Country has capacity to serve 48 boys and 40 girls, ages 5-18, for a total of 88 children at any one time.
