Teenage shooter kills 9, then self, in Munich.
On Friday, a teenage gunman in Munich killed nine other people and then himself in a rampage that sprawled from a McDonald’s to a shopping mall to a parking garage. Authorities say they have found no initial terror links that could explain the shooting by Ali Sonboly, 18. They say it’s more likely he was personally motivated by psychiatric problems and trouble with bullying. Sonboly’s rampage was the third mass killing in a week in Europe, following the Nice attack and one on Monday in which a potentially ISIS-inspired man wielding an ax was killed by police after injuring several people on a train in southern Germany. Police found Sonboly dead in the parking garage with a 9-millimeter Glock handgun with the serial number scratched off and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Authorities face the question of how Sonboly was able to acquire a handgun and so much ammunition despite Germany’s strict gun laws. Sonboly did not have a license to own a gun. German officials also were investigating whether he had specifically targeted young people. Of the nine people killed, three were 14 years old, two were 15, and the others were 17, 19, 20 and 45. Additionally, 27 people were injured.
