Group shares a preview of Post Oak history documentary

- JUDI GRIGGS

A screening of the PBS documentary, “Post Oak Boulevard: A Texas Legacy” at Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse was hosted by John Daugherty, Realtors. The production of Uptown Houston and the Texas Foundation for the Arts took guests on a cinematic tour of the neighborhood from the 1800s to the the present.

Guests enjoyed the hour-long video and afterward shared stories of living in the area — many as children. Stories were traded back and forth with many staying long after the presentation. One JDR agent, Rob

Ginn, grew up in Tanglewood and recalled going to the long-gone Post Oak Pharmacy on the corner of San Felipe and Post Oak for milkshakes and cheeseburgers.

“After watching the documentary, I was flooded with memories,” Ginn said. “Seeing Robert Sakowitz there reminded me that I was never really sure why my mother’s fur coats went to ‘winter’ storage every summer,” he said. “One year I asked the driver of the truck that came to the house for the coats to take a look inside — it was packed with every type of fur coat popular in the day. To me as a boy, I could see no reason in the first place to have a fur coat in Texas. And why they had to go back and forth every year.”

Renowned retailer Sakowitz was among the nostalgic guests, noting that when he first opened a store at the “remote” corner of Post Oak and Westheimer, people thought he was crazy.

The Champions office of BHGRE Gary Greene has been on the road this summer to varying results. Associate Teresa

Dial recently completed a 300-mile bicycle ride in Michigan to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation.

“The best part was my 90-year-old mother at the finish line cheering me on,” she said. Fellow agent Steve

Spicer was not quite as successful — but at least as determined — in finishing the Cypress Sprint Triathlon in spite of his bike breaking down 10 miles into the 13-mile trek.

“I carried it for a mile-and a half before we were able to get it fixed enough for me to ride it in,” Spicer said. Sometimes there’s victory in just finishing the race. Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty’s graphic artist and magazine editor Gregg Van Houten went to Comic- -Con in San Diego recently, accompanied by fellow employees, along with

Amory Nguyen, office manager, and Stephanie

Cleary, director of operations. Van Houten made a Han Solo outfit from “Star Wars: A New Hope” for his son, Wyatt, who won a costume contest there. Van Houten said that Wyatt “hammed it up a little and really got the audience cheering.”
