JOHN AUSTIN HUGHES

-

1927-2016

John Austin Hughes peacefully left this mortal world on Wednesday, August 10th 2016, surrounded by his family. Beloved by all, John was a special man with integrity and true grit. He joins his wife of 57 years, Barbara Hughes, and his brother Delbert, and his faithful canine sidekick, Annie. John was happiest when surrounded by his family enjoying warm Houston days admiring his garden and pool. He was the hardest worker and sweetest man his family knew, and he passed on his best qualities and values to all that were close to him.

John Hughes was born on August 28th, 1927, in Pampa, Texas, to Delbert and Daisy Hughes. He left Pampa to attend Kings Point, the Merchant Marine Academy, where he graduated in three years to serve his country on a Naval aircraft carrier in World War II and the Korean War. Following his Military career, he worked for Lykes Line Shipping Company where he met and married the Captain’s niece. He then became a pipeline engineer; he was known for designing the first offshore gas rigs. These careers allowed him to travel the world and brought fascinating stories and gifts back from all corners of the world.

John is survived by his three beautiful daughters and a large loving family. Eldest daughter, Cynthia Hughes Phillips, husband Glenn and children Charles, Jennifer – spouse Chris, and Stephanie – spouse Nathan; Kay Hughes Braly, husband Cliff and sons Ford and Austin; and Sandra Hughes, his youngest daughter. He also had five great grandchildren, Vera, Cassian, Eloise, Margot, and James. The family appreciates the friendship and loving support of Mariaan de Swardt and Cindy Benzon.

Thank you to everyone who has known and loved John, showed unwavering support for him and his grieving family. We are very appreciative. John was a man of simple pleasures and will be remembered with a backyard barbeque with close friends and family, exactly what he wished for.

John Austin Hughes – You are loved, missed and remembered fondly.
