Bettye Jo Ingram Hughes of Victoria, passed away quietly at home, surrounded by her family, on August 10, 2016. She was 84 years old.

Bettye is survived by her husband of 67 years, John Hughes; her children, Sue Herbold, Dona Sabin (Gary), and Jay Hughes (Melanie); grandchild­ren, Bridgette Wood (Wayne), Nic Herbold (Dianne), Kim Sewalt (Steven), Brian Sabin (Jennifer), Andrew Sabin, Jessica Delacruz (Chris), Jace Hughes, and Jake Hughes (Megan); and 15 great grandchild­ren. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Annie Ingram; her sisters, Mary Nell Bryant and Wanda Hughes; her brother, George (Pepper) Ingram, Jr.; her son-in-law, Frank Herbold; and her great granddaugh­ter, Johnna Wood.

Bettye was born on June 25, 1932, in Spring Hill, Texas. She was very active socially and in school. She was a cheerleade­r, and played the clarinet and bells in the Mt Pleasant High School band. Bettye was also proficient on the piano. She married John William Hughes on June 5, 1949, and had three children; Sue, Dona, and Jay. Upon John’s graduation from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in chemical engineerin­g, the family joined Union Carbide and moved to Victoria in 1956.

Bettye made many friends during her years in Victoria. She was a Girl Scout Leader, and a member of Grace Presbyteri­an Church, where she actively participat­ed on various committees and in Circle. She was also a member of the Garden Club and Bridge Club. Her children kept her very busy in school by volunteeri­ng her for everything. She also enjoyed square dancing and water skiing.

Bettye and John moved to Illinois in 1971, where she introduced everyone they met to chicken fried steak, tacos, and real hamburgers. She loved to cook and entertain. In 1979 Bettye and John moved to Houston, Texas, and for the next 30 years Bettye was again very active at Grace Presbyteri­an Church, in Houston, and with the Women’s Club in her neighborho­od. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, painting, making friends, entertaini­ng, and staying in touch with everyone. She kept a life-long journal of her family life, travels, and friends.

Bettye passed away peacefully and quietly after a faithful, love and laughter-filled life, and will be remembered for her beauty, joy, and love of family and friends.

Bettye requested cremation, and a memorial service will be held at Grace Presbyteri­an Church in Victoria, Tx, at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 20, 2016. Her urn will be placed in the Columbariu­m located at the church, after the memorial service. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
