Rioting rocks Milwaukee after police shooting

- From wire reports

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker put the National Guard on alert last Sunday night as Milwaukee grappled with the shooting of a 23-year-old man by a police officer, who was also black. The shooting prompted riots and protests in one of the nation’s most segregated cities. The news of Syville Smith’s death spread on social media Aug. 13, and angry residents set a gas station and a bank on fire and threw bricks at police. One protester was shot and an officer was injured during clashes. Several were arrested. Protesters also reportedly chased off journalists from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, shoving and punching one of them, the newspaper reported. While details remain murky, police say Smith was armed and wouldn’t let go of his gun after a traffic stop and ran from police. The Department of Justice is in the process of a voluntary review of the city’s police department.
