CF Adam Jones was held out of the lineup Saturday against the Yankees after aggravatin­g his hamstring injury on Friday. He tried to talk his way into starting, manager Buck Showalter said.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

RHP Jake Peavy, who was scheduled to make his first start since in nearly a month Saturday night against the Atlanta Braves, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

Peavy, who was placed on the DL retroactiv­e to Aug. 21, was replaced as the starter by Albert Suarez, who was recalled from Class AAA Sacramento.

Peavy, 35, is 5-9 this season with a 5.55 ERA.

TEXAS RANGERS

Reliever Jeremy Jeffress was away from the team for a second day Saturday as Major League Baseball looked into the pitcher’s arrest on a drunken driv- ing charge.

Thad Levine, the team’s assistant general manager, said the players’ associatio­n was working closely with the commission­er’s office, along with Jeffress and his agent, to “determine a best course of action moving forward.” Levine said he didn’t know the time frame for a resolution.

Jeffress, 28, was put on MLB’s restricted list Friday. Online records for the Dallas County jail show he was booked around 5:15 a.m. Friday on a driving while intoxicate­d charge. He’s free on a $500 bond.

Jeffress was twice suspended while in the minor leagues for violating drug rules, the last for 100 games in 2009.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS

RHP Joe Ross, who has been out since early July with shoulder inflammati­on, will begin a rehab assignment at Class AAA Syracuse on Sunday.
