HBU wins in OT; Prairie View starts 2-0 in SWAC play

Tony Dawson’s lone touchdown pass of the night — 25 yards to Wesley Lewis in overtime — lifted Houston Baptist to a 27-24 overtime victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday night at Husky Stadium.

Dawson finished 13-of25 passing with 239 yards and had 12 carries for 70 yards and a score for HBU (2-1, 1-1 Southland Conference). Lewis had two receptions for 94 yards.

Nik Grau put the Wildcats on top 24-21 with a 38yard field goal to start the extra session. Just minutes before, his 37-yard attempt was blocked with 58 seconds left in regulation.

Dallas Sealey knotted the game at 21 with a 12yard run with 7:08 left to play. Sealey was 32-of-45 passing for 345 yards with a touchdown and had 14 carries for 72 yards and a score for Abilene Christian (0-3, 0-1).

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M41 ALABAMA A&M 20

Sta’fon McCray rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns, including a 61-yarder late in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers had 543 total yards in a win over the Bulldogs at Huntsville, Ala.

McCray, a community college transfer, averaged more than 11 yards per carry on 17 attempts. He came into the game with just one carry for 4 yards this season. His first touchdown went for 10 yards and put Prairie View (2-1, 2-0 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) up 28-13 with 5:45 left in the third quarter.

De’Angelo Balla answered with a 13-yard scoring run for Alabama A&M (1-2, 1-1) to make it a one-score game, 28-20, but Caleb Broach’s 3-yard run midway through the fourth and McCray’s long sprint salted the game away.

SMU 29, LIBERTY 14

Braeden West rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns, the second on a 66-yard dash, and the Mustangs pulled away from the Flames at Dallas.

Stephen Calvert found Dante Shells with an 8-yard touchdown pass to get Liberty (1-2) within striking distance, 19-14, with 2:35 left in the third quarter.

SMU (2-1) closed with a flourish, driving 57 yards to set up Josh Williams’ 27yard field goal to make it 22-14 with 47 seconds left, and Jordan Wyatt put the exclamatio­n point in the win, picking off a Calvert pass with 18 seconds left and returning it 34 yards for a touchdown.

ARMY 66, UTEP 14

Darnell Woolfolk ran for three touchdowns, Andy Davidson rushed for 106 yards and another score, and the Black Knights (3-0) routed the Miners at El Paso.

UTEP (1-2) allowed the most points at home since 2003.

SAM HOUSTON ST. 44 LAMAR 31

Jeremiah Briscoe threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bearkats (2-0) to a win over the Cardinals (0-3) in the Southland Conference opener for both teams at Beaumont.
