Dynamo hand RSL first home loss of season

SANDY, Utah — Alex scored off a defensive miscue in the first half, and the Dynamo held on for a 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night, handing the Utah club its first home loss of the season.

Real Salt Lake (12-10-8) midfielder John Stertzer turned it over deep in his own end as a result of Ricardo Clark’s pressure. Alex pounced on the loose ball and free path at goal, slotting a toe punch past goalkeeper Nick Rimando in the 36th minute.

The Dynamo (6-11-11) ended a three-game winless streak.

PARALYMPIC­S Iranian cyclist dies after crash

An Iranian cyclist died after crashing in a road race at the Paralympic­s in Rio de Janeiro.

The Internatio­nal Paralympic­s Committee identified the cyclist as Bahman Golbarnezh­ad, 48.

The IPC said he received emergency treatment on the course and was transporte­d to a hospital, where officials said he died.

The IPC said Golbarnezh­ad crashed about 10:40 a.m. local time on a mountainou­s stretch of the road cycling course. The IPC said he suffered cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital. The cause of the crash was not clear, and officials said it was being investigat­ed.

MOTOR SPORTS Jones hangs on for Xfinity win

Erik Jones passed Elliott Sadler with nine laps to go and held off Kyle Larson to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Chicagolan­d Speedway in Joliet, Ill., allowing Ryan Sieg and Blake Koch to claim the final two spots in the Chase for the championsh­ip.

The 20-year-old Jones’ series-high fourth win of the season left him as the top seed for the sevenrace Chase. Jones won the Truck Series title a year ago and will move to the Sprint Cup next year.

Sprint Cup champion Kyle Busch dominated most of the race, leading 154 of the first 181 laps until he cut a tire and spun out.

Sadler was third, followed by Daniel Suarez and Justin Allgaier. Busch finished 13th.

Sieg finished 12th and Koch 15th to earn the final spots in the 12-driver Chase field. They will be joined by Allgaier, Ty Dillon, Brennan Poole, Brandan Gaughn, Ryan Reed, Brandon Jones and Darrell Wallace Jr.

The Chase begins next week at Kentucky In other news: • Kyle Larson posted the top speed of 183.299 mph in the final practice session for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup opener at Chicagolan­d Speedway.

Larson is one of four drivers who have qualified for the 10-race playoff for the first time. He will start 10th in Sunday’s race at the 1.5-mile oval.

Rookie Chase Elliott and top-seed and polesitter Kyle Busch were the next two fastest.

GOLF Chun up by 4 in Evian tourney

South Korea’s In Gee Chun shot a 6-under-par 65 in the rain to extend her lead to four strokes with one round left in the Evian Championsh­ip at Vian-lesBains, France .

Chun had a 19-under 194 total in the last of the LPGA Tour’s five major championsh­ips.

South Korea’s Sung Hyun Park was second after a 67.

TENNIS Murray brothers keep Britain alive

Andy and Jamie Murray kept Britain alive in its Davis Cup semifinal against Argentina, winning the doubles match in four sets to reduce the titleholde­r’s deficit to 2-1.

The Murray brothers beat Juan Martin del Potro and Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in front of a rowdy crowd at Glasgow, Scotland.

In the other semifinal at Zadar, Croatia, Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig gave Croatia a 2-1 lead against France by upsetting top-ranked doubles pair Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-3 on Saturday.

HOCKEY Europe tops U.S. in World Cup

Marian Gaborik, Leon Draisaitl and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored, Jaroslav Halak made 35 saves and Team Europe upset the United States 3-0 in a stunning opening game at the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.

Jonathan Quick allowed three goals on 17 shots but fell victim to blunders in front of him.

The U.S. outshot Europe 35-17, went 0-for-4 on the power play and had a goal disallowed.

Losing in regulation puts the Americans in a deep hole with only two games left in the preliminar­y round. They face favored Canada on Tuesday. In other news: • Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin has a hairline fracture in his heel after playing for Team Canada in preparatio­n for the World Cup of Hockey. The NHL team said the fracture was detected during an MRI exam and that Seguin will be re-evaluated in a week. Dallas opens training camp next Friday.

PRO BASEBALL Limonta, Barfield power Skeeters

Johan Limonta drove in two runs, and Jeremy Barfield hit his 27th homer of the season in the Skeeters’ 4-1 Atlantic League victory over Southern Maryland at Constellat­ion Field in Sugar Land.

Jake Hale allowed one runs and three hits in six innings to get the pitching decision.
