FOUR THINGS TO WATCH

-

Osweiler must beat the rush

1 A safe prediction is quarterback Brock Osweiler won’t commit five turnovers, including four interceptions, as Brian Hoyer did in the Chiefs’ 30-0 victory in the playoff game. Osweiler threw an interception in the 23-14 victory over Chicago, but he was careful with the ball the other times. He better get rid of it in a hurry because the Chiefs’ front seven dominates the Texans, especially right end Allen Bailey. The Chiefs had six defensive touchdowns last season.

Play a game of keep away

2 In their victory over the Bears, the Texans relied on running back Lamar Miller (32 touches) and some short completions by quarterback Brock Osweiler to control the ball for 36 minutes, 19 seconds. As long as Miller can handle that type of load, he’ll continue to get the ball. If a receiver wasn’t open down the field, Osweiler checked down for 4- or 5-yard completions. The best plan is to always keep Alex Smith and the Chiefs’ offense on the sideline.

Smith spreads his passes

3 With running back Jamaal Charles out for another game, the Chiefs will rely heavily on Spencer Ware. He was terrific in the comeback victory over San Diego. The 5-10, 229-pound Ware carried 11 times for 70 yards and a touchdown. He was a force in the passing game with seven catches for 129 yards. Andy Reid uses his backs in the passing game as well as any coach in the league. Quarterback Alex Smith completed passes to eight receivers.

Special teams need big game

4 The Chiefs’ special teams are among the best in the league. They led the NFL last season with an average drive start at the 31.3yard line. They were third in opponents’ average drive start (24.6). The Texans must counter with dramatically improved special teams. Their kicking game has been terrific. Coverage teams have improved under new coordinator Larry Izzo. They desperately need rookie Tyler Ervin to give the offense good field position.
