Sam Houston St. routs HBU; PV starts 3-0 in SWAC play

Sam Houston State scored four unanswered touchdowns to open Saturday’s game against Houston Baptist and eventually pulled away for a 52-16 win at Husky Stadium.

The Bearkats (3-0, 2-0 Southland Conference) had 405 yards by halftime and used only 2 minutes and 1 second or less on each of their first four touchdown drives. Javin Webb scored twice in the first quarter.

HBU (2-2, 1-2) forced a pair of punts after the initial touchdown, but Sam Houston State recovered quickly, marching 87 yards in five plays. First downs by Webb and Remus Bulmer set up a 48-yard touchdown from Jeremiah Briscoe to Yedidah Louis for a 14-0 lead.

The Bearkats led 28-0 when Briscoe found Na- than Stewart for an 8-yard touchdown to begin the second quarter, set up by Tyler Scott’s 25-yard reception.

Bulmer finished with a career-high 124 rushing yards on 19 carries. Louis led all receivers with 111 yards, while Briscoe finished with 369 passing yards and three touchdowns without an intercepti­on.

Anthony Wiltz accounted for 151 all-purpose yards and had three touchdowns to help lead the Panthers to a rout of the Delta Devils in Itta Bena, Miss.

David Washington threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 69 yards and another score to lead the Monarchs to a win over the Roadrunner­s (1-3) in the Conference USA opener for both teams at Norfolk, Va.
