Hettie Page Garwood, age 87, passed away on September 26, 2016. Hettie was the daughter of Calvin B. Garwood, Sr. and Christie Moore Garwood, who preceded her in death. Hettie was also preceded in death by her brother, Calvin B. Garwood, Jr.

Hettie was born in Houston, studied in New York and lived most of her adult life in her home on the Pedernales River with her beloved pets. She graduated high school from The Day School in New Haven, Connecticu­t. She received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas, cum laude, and received her Masters of Arts from Columbia University. She also studied at the Yale School of Music. She was an accomplish­ed musician and singer, having mastered the piano, violin, harpsicord and organ and performed numerous concerts and solo performanc­es during her life in New York and Texas. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi, Pi Kappa Lambda, Mu Phi Epsilon and Kappa Delta Pi. She also engaged in private instructio­ns in voice, piano and theory.

Hettie was an animal lover and raised and showed Bassett Hounds, winning numerous trophies and honors including raising and showing Lord Jack, National Bassett Hound Champion. She judged numerous dog shows and was an American Kennel Club Judge Emeritus. She also edited or wrote for the Dog World, Hound Crier, Saber Tails and Dog News.

Hettie is survived by her niece, Anne Garwood Conner, and her nephews, Calvin Baxter Garwood, III and John Morgan Garwood as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. A family graveside service will be conducted at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
