STANLEY HARRIS VOELKEL
1929-2016
Stanley Harris Voelkel was born October 30, 1929 in the small farming community of Breslau near Hallettsville, Texas and died on October 5, 2016 after a lengthy illness. He had an enduring love for his family and passion for serving his clients and professional organization as a Certified Public Accountant. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Daly Voelkel, and seven children: David Voelkel, Diana Voelkel Mason, Foster Voelkel, Anna Voelkel Scott, Stephen Voelkel, Sandra Voelkel Stavinoha and husband Randy, Stanley Voelkel II and wife Kimberly. He has thirteen grandchildren: Kristina Mason, Garrett Mason, Lindsey Mason, Paul Voelkel, Bruce Voelkel, Shane Voelkel, Hunter Scott, Blake Scott, Kylie Stavinoha, Luke Stavinoha, Jacob Stavinoha, Emily Voelkel, Grace Voelkel, sister Lucille and husband Foster Martin. He is preceded in death by his father, Adolf (Kelly) Voelkel, mother Lillie Voelkel, brother James Voelkel, sister-in-law Natalie Voelkel and sonin-law William (Bill) Scott. He served in the U.S. Army Finance Corp. during the Korean War and participated in Operation Castle on the Island of Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands where he witnessed the first Hydrogen bomb test. He received his Bachelors and Masters degree in Accounting from the University of Houston and taught Accounting while pursuing his Masters degree. He served as a board member of the U of H College of Business Foundation. His professional career was marked by serving as the founding member of the accounting firm Voelkel, Cabiness & Company. He served as President of the Houston Chapter and Texas Society of CPAs receiving the most prestigious award given by the Texas Society of CPAs, the Meritorious Service to the Accounting Profession. He had a passion of helping needy students through the Accounting Foundation, the Houston Livestock Show and other organizations. He was the original Chairman of the statewide CPA’s Helping Schools program which provides mentorship to students K-12. He was a founding board member of Covenant House-Texas. He loved hunting, fishing, farming, ranching and spending time with family and grandchildren. His grandsons will serve as Pallbearers while his Honorary Pallbearers are his nephews, Kelly, Gary and Mark Voelkel. Visitation will be Sunday October 9th, 4:00-7:00 pm with a Rosary commencing at 6:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway. Funeral mass will be Monday, October 10th, 11:00 am, Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church, 1530 Norwalk Dr., Katy, Texas.
