Mayfield, OU win shootout over Mahomes, Tech

LUBBOCK — Baker Mayfield threw for seven touchdown passes and 545 yards to help No. 16 Oklahoma beat Texas Tech 66-59 on Saturday night in a game that broke the NCAA record for combined offensive yardage with 1,708 yards, including 854 by each team.

Mayfield, who transferre­d to Oklahoma from Texas Tech after the 2013 season, completed 27 of 36 passes and broke the school game touchdown mark of six held by Landry Jones. His TD passes went for 56, 49, 23, 23, 43, 34 and 15 yards.

Joe Mixon caught three touchdown passes and Dede Westbrook had two for the Sooners (5-2, 4-0 Big 12).

Mixon also ran for two touchdowns — a 46-yarder and a 42-yarder. He finished with 263 yards rushing and 114 yards receiving. He is the first OU player to reach 200 yards rushing and 100 receiving in the same game. West- brook caught nine passes for 202 yards.

Pat Mahomes threw for five touchdowns and 734 yards for Texas Tech (3-4, 1-3) .

His passing yards total tied the NCAA record, matching Connor Halliday when Washington State played California in 2014.

The 125 points are the second most in a game involving a ranked team. The record is 133 in thenNo. 9 West Virginia’s 70-63 victory over thenNo. 25 Baylor on Sept. 29, 2012.

Keke Coutee caught 10 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown for the Red Raiders; teammate Jonathan Giles had 10 catches for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Nineteen players caught at least one pass.

The Sooners averaged 11.2 yards per play.

W. VIRGINIA 34, TCU 10

Skyler Howard threw four touchdown passes, and the No. 12 Mountainee­rs’ improving defense held the Horned Frogs scoreless in the second half at Morgantown, W.Va.

The Mountainee­rs (6-0, 3-0) are off to their best start since winning their first seven games in 2006.

Howard had first-half scoring tosses of 10, 22 and 11 yards to three receivers to stake West Virginia to a 21-10 halftime lead. He finished 16-of-23 passing for 231 yards.

The Mountainee­rs used scoring drives of 11 and 15 plays in the third quarter to eat up most of the clock.

The Horned Frogs (4-3, 2-2) had only five secondhalf possession­s.

OKLAHOMA ST. 44 KANSAS 20

Mason Rudolph threw for 220 yards and one touchdown, Jalen McCleskey caught six passes for 129 yards and Justice Hill ran for 162 yards as the Cowboys (5-2, 3-1) ruined the Jayhawks’ homecoming at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas (1-6, 0-4) got 250 yards passing and a touchdown from quarterbac­k Montell Cozart and Ke’aun Kinner rushed for 145 yards, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Jayhawks’ 21st consecutiv­e loss to FBS opponents.
