Sam Houston St. stays unbeaten; Prairie View wins

HUNTSVILLE — Jeremiah Briscoe threw for 504 yards and six touchdowns, breaking a school record for touchdown passes in a season, and Sam Houston State remained perfect with a 56-43 win over McNeese State on Saturday night.

Briscoe’s 40 touchdowns break Dustin Long’s record of 39 set in 2004.

Sam Houston State improved to 9-0 and 7-0 in the Southland Conference.

Jalen Morton scored two touchdowns on the ground and threw for another as the Panthers overcame an early 14-point deficit to beat the Braves in Prairie View.

Morton’s 44-yard touchdown pass to Darius Floyd with 4:05 left in the third quarter gave Prairie View (6-3, 6-1 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) its first lead of the game at 24-21.

Lenard Tillery ran for 125 yards and a score, and the Jaguars converted two intercepti­ons into scoring drives to beat the Tigers in Baton Rouge, La.

Brad Woodard ran for 105 yards for Texas Southern (3-6, 3-4 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

Aaron Jones ran for 228 yards and two scores to help the Miners beat the Huskies in a nonconfere­nce game at El Paso.

UTEP (3-6) scored the first 28 points and led 35-3 late in the third quarter before Houston Baptist (3-6) reached the end zone for the only time on Max Staver’s 29-yard pass to Terrance Peters.

Carlos Henderson scored five touchdowns for the second time this season, and the Bulldogs pulled away from the Mean Green (4-5, 2-3 Conference USA) in Denton.
