Though “Honky Tonk Heaven” gets things started on Thursday, the Houston Cinema Arts Festival runs through Nov. 17 with a robust and varied schedule. Here are some of the fest’s highlights::
“Jackie”: Natalie Portman portrays Jacqueline Kennedy in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination in Pablo Larraín’s biopic. 6:30 p.m. Friday at the MFAH

“Paint It Black”: Actor Amber Tamblyn’s directorial debut tells the story of a woman dealing with the aftermath of her boyfriend’s death. 6:10 p.m. Saturday at Sundance Cinemas
CineSpace screening and awards: Short film competition with NASArelated themes. 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Houston Museum of Natural Science
“Lion”: A child who gets lost in India grows into a young man who searches for his long-lost family with the aid of Google Earth. 7 p.m. Monday at Sundance Cinemas
