Bowen & Co. pace TSU win; Dawson lifts HBU over SFA

Johnathan Bowen passed for a touchdown and ran for another, and Brad Woodard and Tylor Cook each ran for 100-plus yards as Texas Southern beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 27-10 at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.

Bowen was 4-of-7 passing for 88 yards — including a 59-yard TD to Tracy Johnson with 54 seconds left in the first half — and had 14 carries for 66 yards.

After Eric Medina kicked field goals of 44 and 24 yards, Johnson’s touchdown catch gave the Tigers (4-6, 4-4 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference) a 20-0 lead at halftime.

Tony Dawson threw for two touchdowns and rushed for a school-record 218 yards and two more scores to lead the Huskies past the visiting Lumberjack­s.

Dawson scored on an 83yard run in the third quar- ter and a 41-yard run in the fourth to help Houston Baptist (4-6, 3-4 Southland Conference) build a 31-14 lead. Dawson, who set the previous record of 191 yards rushing last month, carried the ball 15 times.

Dawson found Terrance Peters on 26-yard TD. He later hit Ricardo Barnett for a 32-yard score for a 14-7 lead at the half.

Stephen F. Austin (4-6, 3-5) tied the game early in the third quarter on Kijana Amous’ 2-yard run. Three plays later, Dawson broke off the longest play from scrimmage in school history.

Jeremiah Briscoe threw for 337 yards and five touchdowns, and Yedidiah Louis caught 11 of those passes for 125 yards as the top-ranked Bearkats drubbed the Demons at Natchitoch­es, La. Sam Houston State (10-0, 8-0) will host Central Arkansas (9-1, 8-0) for the Southland Conference title Saturday.
