Burial or cremation

-

Costly rules

Regarding “Legal battle looms for latest abortion mandate” (Page A3, Wednesday), according to estimates provided by critics of the rule, the price of cremation or burial could cost, on average, $2,000 per procedure.

The Texas Medical Association and Texas Hospital Association, both of which oppose the rules, said cremation could cost between $1,500 and $4,000.

If Gov. Greg Abbott wants to pursue this, he should pass legislation to pay for it and see if Texans really support this action.

Flawed law

It is quite obvious that the requirement to bury or cremate fetal remains resulting from an abortion has nothing whatsoever to do with “dignity” and “respect” to the unborn. This is so because the requirement does not apply to fetal remains resulting from a miscarriage or a home abortion. If the law were truly about “dignity” and “respect,” then it would apply to these situations as well. This law is so patently flawed that it will be overturned as soon as it is litigated. It is interesting to note that funerals are never held for miscarriages.

It is time for the Legislature to stop wasting time on ever more tortured ways to restrict abortion and turn attention to the many very serious problems our state faces, such as school funding and crumbling infrastructure. David McMillin, The Woodlands
