UT rallies past Long Beach

AUSTIN — Tevin Mack scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, helping Texas erase a 12-point deficit and defeat Long Beach State 71-65 on Saturday.

Eric Davis Jr. scored 16 points for Texas, and Kendal Yancy added 11.

Evan Payne led Long Beach with a season-best 26 points.

Payne, a junior, made a career-best eight 3-pointers. His 3-pointer early in the second half gave Long Beach a 12-point lead.

But Texas chipped away, with Mack and Davis combining to score 12 consecutiv­e points as the Longhorns overtook Long Beach (2-10) and created separation.

Davis made consecutiv­e baskets, one a 3-pointer, to give Texas (5-4) a seven-point lead with less than six minutes remaining. Mack’s 3-pointer from the corner put Texas ahead by eight with 4:40 remaining. TEXAS A&M83 SOUTH CAROLINA ST. 76

Tyler Davis scored 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting as the Aggies defeated the Bulldogs in College Station.

Texas A&M (7-2) led by at least eight points through the second half until a last-second 3-pointer by South Carolina State’s Greg Mortimer.

Nedeljko Prijovic’s layup with just under eight minutes left gave the Bobcats the lead, and Texas State held on for a win over the Panthers in San Marcos.

Ojai Black hit a 3-pointer, and Prijovic hit a jumper to give Texas State breathing room and the Bobcats closed the game out from the freethrow line.

Kavin Gilder-Tilbury and Nijhal Pearson each scored 14 points to lead Texas State (5-4), which extended its home record to 3-1 with the victory. Prijovic added 10 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench.

Daquan Cook scored 20 points to lead Prairie View (2-8), which now is 1-7 in road games to start the season and have lost five straight — to Houston, Kansas State and No. 16 Wisconsin on the road and to Lamar at home. TCU 72, WOFFORD 63

Freshman point guard Jaylen Fisher led a balanced attack with 13 points, and the Horned Frogs bounced back from their first loss under new coach Jamie Dixon with a victory over the Terriers in Fort Worth.

JD Miller was another of five players in double figures with 12 points for TCU (9-1) in the first meeting between the schools. Dixon improved to 3-0 against the Terriers after beating them twice in 13 years at Pittsburgh.

Fletcher Magee scored 18 points for Wofford (3-7), a four-time qualifier for the NCAA Tournament since 2010 but winless in seven tries against Division I teams this season. SAM HOUSTON ST. 79 SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 73

Christophe­r Galbreath Jr. scored 26 points, and the Bearkats snapped a short two-game road losing streak with a victory over the Salukis in Carbondale, Ill.

Torry Butler and Aurimas Majausukas added 17 points each for Sam Houston State (6-3), with Butler also adding nine rebounds. The Bearkats hit 54.5 percent of their shots and 15 of 19 at the free throw line.

Colton Weisbrod scored 20 points to lead five scorers in double figures as the Cardinals trounced the Division III Roos in Beaumont to stop a three-game losing skid.

Cameron McGee and Zjori Bosha had 14 points apiece, Nick Garth added 13, and Joey Frenchwood chipped in 11 for Lamar (5-4).

Kennard Robinson scored 20 points, Paul Taulton added 19 on 9-of9 shooting, and the Celts edged the Rams in Red River Athletic Conference play in Austin.

Paris Marquez and Nathan Thormaehle­n each contribute­d 13 points for St. Thomas (4-7, 1-1).

Malcolm Ballard had 22 points to lead HustonTill­otson (1-5, 1-1).
