New Mexico nips UTSA

-

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Coach Bob Davie waited a long time for this moment. It had been quite a while for his New Mexico Lobos, too.

Davie earned his first career bowl victory when the Lobos, boosted by a pair of short touchdown runs from Richard McQuarley, beat UTSA 23-20 on Saturday in the New Mexico Bowl.

Davie had been 0-4 in bowls — three when he coached at Notre Dame, then last year with the Lobos in this event.

The Lobos (9-4) posted just their second bowl victory in a half-century.

The Lobos’ previous postseason win came in the 2007 New Mexico Bowl over Nevada. Before that, it was a victory in the 1961 Aviation Bowl.

Jarveon Williams ran for 125 yards for the Roadrunners (6-7), who lost in their first bowl appearance in the program’s six-year history. APPALACHIAN ST. 31 TOLEDO 28

Marcus Cox rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown, and Michael Rubino kicked the go-ahead 39-yard field goal with 5:14 left to lift the Moun- taineers to a win over the Rockets in the Camellia Bowl at Montgomery, Ala.

Cox became the ninth Football Bowl Subdivision player with four 1,000yard seasons and the 22nd to top 5,000 in his career. Game MVP Taylor Lamb passed for 119 yards and a touchdown and ran for 126 yards and a score.

Toledo (9-4) marched down the field after the field goal by Appalachian State (10-3).

The Rockets initially lined up to go for it on fourth-and-2 before calling time out. Jameson Vest pushed his 30-yard field-goal attempt wide right with 1:48 remaining. ARKANSAS ST. 31 CENTRAL FLORIDA 13

Justice Hansen threw three touchdown passes to Kendall Sanders to help the Red Wolves beat the Knights in the AutoNation Cure Bowl at Orlando, Fla.

Hansen and Sanders hooked up for touchdown strikes of 12, 75 and 17 yards, but the biggest plays of the night came from the Red Wolves’ special teams. They scored on a blocked punt and produced two turnovers that were turned into touchdowns.

The Red Wolves (8-5) took a 17-0 lead over the Knights (6-7) in the first quarter after a UCF fumbled kickoff return set up Hansen’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Hansen. ODDS AND ENDS
