No. 4 Baylor stays unbeaten at 10-0

FORT HOOD — Al Freeman scored a seasonhigh 19 points and made a career-best five 3-pointers, and No. 4 Baylor returned to Fort Hood with an 82-57 win over Jackson State on Saturday night.

It was the second straight year that the Bears played on the nation’s largest Army post, about an hour’s drive south of their Waco campus. Baylor is 10-0 for the first time since starting 17-0 in 2011-12.

There was a near-capacity crowd that included soldiers and their families in the 2,400-seat Abrams Gym, which has a large American flag on the wall behind the benches opposite the only permanent set of stands.

Edric Dennis scored 21 points for Jackson State, which stayed close until a 24-6 Baylor run that started late in the first half and ended with the Bears up 58-38 with about 12 minutes remaining.

Baylor’s Jo Lual-Acuil had a season-high 17 points with six rebounds and five blocks — slightly better than his 4.3-block average that ranks second nationally. HOUSTON 83 UT-RIO GRANDE VALLEY 58

Damyean Dotson scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Cougars beat the Vaqueros at Hofheinz Pavilion.

It was the third doubledoub­le in the last four games for Dotson, who was 8-of-13 from the field including six 3-pointers for the Cougars (8-2).

Antonio Green scored 11 and grabbed five rebounds for UT-Rio Grande Valley (5-9). LSU 88 TEXAS SOUTHERN 80

Duop Reath scored 21 points, and LSU made six straight free throws in the final minute to hold off Texas Southern in a nonconfere­nce game at Baton Rouge, La.

LSU, which fell behind by five points in the second half, took the lead for good on a field goal by Reath with 6:37 remaining. TSU (4-7), which has lost six games in a row, came within one point on three occasions over the next five minutes.

Both Zach Lofton and Demontrae Jefferson had 18 points for TSU. PITTSBURGH 83, RICE 73

Jamel Artis scored a season-high 31 points as the Panthers survived 18 turnovers to hold off the Owls in Pittsburgh.

Rice (8-3) got big production from the backcourt, as Marcus Jackson scored 20 and Marcus Evans had 19. The Owls shot 38.5 percent from 3-point range but just 42.9 percent overall and were outscored in the paint, 28-26. TEXAS TECH 79 RICHMOND 72

Zach Smith had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Devon Thomas added a career-high 17 points, and the Red Raiders held off the Spiders in Richmond, Va., for their first true road win of the season.

Colter Lasher tied his career-best with 28 points, and Reveal Chukwujekw­u added 21 as the Huskies (4-5) routed the Patriots (7-8) at Sharp Gym. UTAH 92 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M60

Kyle Kuzma posted his sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 15 rebounds as Utes cruised past the Panthers in Salt Lake City.

Paris Marquez scored 18 points, Kennard Robinson and Nathan Thormaehle­n added 13 apiece, and the Celts routed the Mustangs at Jerabeck Gym.
