Ray shares tips to help Realtors move their careers forward

- By Rebecca Maitland

Real estate agents are always trying to make their mark, and Richard Ray, a Realtor with John Daugherty, Realtors, has some thoughts to help Realtors move forward in their careers.

“As we go about helping people to buy and sell in Houston, we want to always put our best foot forward,” Ray said. “But what exactly is the best way to do that? Where do you start, restart or recharge your real estate career? How do you make your mark in the real estate industry in Houston?”

Initially, when starting out, Realtors will have to have an intensive degree of focus. But Ray said there are all sorts of temptations that will try to get a Realtor to do anything else but focus on the true matter at hand — their real estate career.

“You will have to work hard every day. You will also have challenging decisions to make that will mean saying ‘no’ for you to say ‘yes’ to your new career in real estate. You will have to commit your time, energy, resources and yes, money to what you so eagerly want to do,” Ray said.

Ray advises that new Realtors take time to explore and farm a geographic area that interests them and attend events and activities that relate to their career.

He said Realtors should take advantage of resources their broker offers such as marketing materials and technology.

“You will need to spend money to make money, but you will be investing in you. Suit up and show up to make your mark,” he said.

“Remember, it is not about you, it is about your clients. I believe that humility is one of the key ingredients to success. It is about helping your clients reach their potential, and manifest their dreams and goals. You have to be driven by the work you are doing every day from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep,” Ray said.

He said Realtors must have passion, not just for real estate, but for life so that all of the hard work does not feel difficult, it feels like learning. Realtors should have passion about what they do and compassion for those they encounter on a daily basis, he said.

“It is how you communicate, interact, perceive, engage and speak with others. In the end, it is all about how you make people feel about themselves that matters. It is not about how many houses you sold or how successful you were over the years,” Ray said.

Finally, it takes courage and faith to trust in yourself and believe in your ability to make things happen and be successful, he said.

“Be consistent in all you do and that will bring you the confidence and courage to make your mark in real estate,” Ray said.
