HOW TEXAS VOTED
WASHINGTON — How the Texas congressional delegation voted on major issues last week:
Senate
1. Serious mental issues, gun checks: Voted, 57-43, to nullify an Obama administration rule designed to keep persons with serious mental illnesses from passing federal background checks on gun purchases.
A yes vote was to send HJ Res 40 to President Trump for his expected signature.
2. Steven Mnuchin, Treasury secretary: Voted, 53-47, to confirm Steven T. Mnuchin, 54, as the 77th secretary of the Treasury.
3. Linda McMahon, Small Business administrator: Voted 81-19, to confirm Linda E. McMahon, 68, as administrator of the Small Business Administration.
4. Scott Pruitt, EPA administrator: Voted, 52-46, to confirm Scott Pruitt, the Oklahoma attorney general, as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.
5. Mick Mulvaney, budget director: Voted, 51-49, to confirm Mick Mulvaney, a four-term congressman from South Carolina, as director of the Office of Management and Budget.
House
1. Independent probe of Trump-Russia ties: Voted, 233-190, to kill a Democratic bid to force floor debate on a bill now in committee that would establish a “National Commission on Foreign Interference in the 2016 Election” for investigating what the FBI has identified as repeated contacts between Russian intelligence officials and associates of candidate Donald Trump. A yes vote was to quash the measure.
2. Expanded opportunities for retirement savings: Voted, 231-193, to nullify a rule designed to guide state governments in setting up privately managed payroll-deduction plans for private-sector workers who do not have access to retirement plans through their employers.
A yes vote was to send the nullification measure (HJ Res 66) to the Senate.
3. Linkage of jobless benefits to drug tests: Voted, 236-189, to nullify as too weak an Obama administration rule under which states can choose to require drug testing of persons applying for unemployment compensation. A yes vote was to send the measure (HJ Res 42) to the Senate.
4. Clampdown on Planned Parenthood: Voted, 230-188, to nullify a rule affirming Planned Parenthood’s eligibility to receive Title X family planning funds despite efforts by some states to deny the funding because it provides abortions. A yes vote was to send the measure (HJ Res 43) to the Senate.
5. Methods of killing animals: Voted, 225-193, to nullify a new Bureau of Fish and Wildlife rule that would prohibit inhumane methods of killing bears, wolves and coyotes on the 16 federal wildlife refuges covering 77 million acres in Alaska.
A yes vote was to send the measure (H Res 69) to the Senate.
