Teacher unions

-

Regarding “Union blasts dues bill” (Page A3, Tuesday), what, exactly, is state Sen. Joan Huffman trying to accomplish with this bill? The so-called unions that represent teachers and most other public servants have no collective bargaining rights, no right to strike, and membership is completely voluntary because this is a “right-towork” state. These organizations have no more access to governing boards than any other citizen, so they don’t peddle much influence. They can lobby in Austin, but by looking at teacher and state worker salaries and benefits, that’s not helped much.

Why doesn’t she go after the unions that represent our first responders? They actually do have collective bargaining powers, and they can strike.

Apparently, Huffman wants her constituents to think that she’s busting some big ol’ bad unions. Bobby Jones, Houston
