GO TEJANO DAY IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

- — Joey Guerra

It almost doesn’t matter who RodeoHouston books for Go Tejano Day. It’s guaranteed to be a recordbreaker every year.

Go Tejano Day performers from 2016, 2015 and 2013 hold the top three RodeoHouston paidattendance records. It’s due in large part to the family atmosphere. Couples, parents, kids, grandparents and besties roam the carnival and livestock show before settling in for “el rodeo.”

No disrespect to the acts on the revolving stage. Think of them as the cherry on top.

This year’s Go Tejano Day features Banda El Recodo, which was founded by Don Cruz Lizárraga in 1938. The 17-member band has obviously cycled through generations, but it still has the same blaring banda sound that has struck a chord with listeners.

It’s a trick in itself to get all those guys onstage

without bumping into each other. The lineup includes four clarinets, three trumpets, a tambora, a bass drum, a tarola, a snare drum, a tuba, three trombones, two alto horns and two singers.

Some of Banda El Recodo’s songs include “Vas a llorar por mi,” La mejor de todas” and “Si no es contigo.”

Expect the night’s other band, Siggno to draw a young, rowdy, ear-piercing crowd. The group from Santa Rosa is one of the freshest in the norteño genre, combining rock, cumbia, blues and jazz.

Siggno has been at it for almost two decades and released “Rockteño” in November. Several of its albums have charted on Billboard.

Members include Jesse Turner (lead vocals, accordion), Richard Rosales (background vocals, bajo sexto), Jacob Turner (electric bass), Joey “JMZ” Jiménez (drums), David Rosas (congas, percussion) and Sergio Tabares (hype man).
