Jane Peden Stewart passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, the 25th of April 2017, at Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX.

A fifth generation Houstonian, Jane was born on the 2nd of January 1931, in Houston, Texas and graduated from San Jacinto High School and Maryland College for Women. She returned to Houston where she worked for the Humble Oil Company.

Jane and her sister, Ardath (“Spuddy”) spent their childhood weekends and summers in Rockport, Texas where she learned to duck hunt, wade fish, go flounderin­g and play cards with their father, Edward Peden. She especially cherished her lifelong best friendship with Mary Bain and “holding court” on Saturday mornings with the Pearson clan at the Avalon Drug Store.

Jane was an active member of The Junior League of Houston, Bayou Bend, Antique Study Group, Brown Thumb Garden Club and the Houston Country Club. She is a lifelong member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church.

Jane is predecease­d by her parents Edward David Peden and Amanda Louise Ellis Peden, sister Ardath Peden Rogers and her husband Tommy, niece Jane (Jan) Rogers, and husband Elbert Davis Stewart Jr. She is survived by her children Elbert Davis Stewart III, Ardath Amanda Stewart, Edward Peden Stewart and wife Barbara, granddaugh­ter Sara Jane Cantwell and husband Chad, great grandchild­ren Grace Elaine Cantwell, Abiageal Marie Cantwell and Orin Peden Cantwell and grandson Evan Davis Stewart. Jane is also survived by her nephew Thomas Peden Rogers and wife Jeana of Rockport, Texas and their children Lanette Rogers Perry and husband Brian, Kayla Jane Rogers and Sierra Peden Rogers and relatives William P. (Billy) and Betty Connor, Weezie Doggett Fitzhugh and Jim, Onie Doggett Swanson and Jim, and Leslie and Ann Doggett.

The family would like to acknowledg­e Jane’s very special caregivers: Trunika Moore, Erneka Eddins and Tracey James. Thanks you so much for your help and being her angels.

A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 6th of May, at The Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard in Houston, where the Rev. John Pitts is to officiate. Immediatel­y following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the nearby Sumners Hall.

Prior to the memorial service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembranc­es, the family requests that memorial contributi­ons in the name of Jane Peden Stewart be directed toward the favorite charity of one’s choice.
