Decor trends 2017
Get the scoop on top home decor ideas of 2017
From midcentury modern design to unique light fixtures and pastel colors, there are plenty of fresh decor ideas to include in a living space. Here are some ideas that Houston-area designers say will be seen everywhere in 2017. Midcentury modern style
Margaret Blue, project designer at PBK Architects, uses a mix of midcentury design, Scandinavian design, and pops of color in this simple and fresh design. “This is a more contemporary version of midcentury modern design that was popular in the ’50s and ’60s,” Blue said.
White with bright accents
Another interior designer trend is clean, white rooms with bright color accents. Laura Umansky, president and creative director of Laura U Interior Design Company, said that “white kitchens will still be on trend this spring and they are even better with a dash of fun color.”
Floating vanities
Adding a floating vanity to your bathroom can create a larger room with an elegant look. “Floating vanities make these small spaces appear roomier and, as we are trending toward smaller, more efficient homes, this makes a lot of sense,” said Umansky.
LED lighting
Creative lighting features are perfect for decorating a unique space — both indoors and outdoors. Connie LeFevre, owner of Design House Inc., and Fabric House Inc., said that “using LEDs which can travel though glass, for instance, without always revealing the bulbs, allows for completely new designs.”
Farmhouse style
Farmhouse style is currently one of the most popular styles to design. Lacie Heckathorne, owner of Lacie Grace Design Company, said “the farmhouse style features sturdy materials like wood and metal and combines it with aged finishes and soft-colored textures, fabrics and accessories. This combination of strong and soft materials gives this style balance. It gives you the rustic feel while keeping your home feeling warm and inviting.”
Abstract patterns
Try adding a unique look to any room by incorporating accessories with abstract shapes and patterns. Blue said that “residential art seems to be going in the more abstract direction with heavy brushstrokes, organic shapes and bright colors.”
Warm grays
This year’s versatile color is gray. “We are seeing a lot less blue-gray and more warm, golden undertones,” said Umansky. LeFevre also suggests using a neutral blush color, which “can also make a good neutral along with the stillin-demand gray.”
Transitional style
A serene space can be created by combining traditional and contemporary styles. Heckathorne said the transitional style is “simple, but sophisticated and is a great way to get a classic and timeless design.”
