NEW YORK — With heavy rain expected to persist in the region throughout Saturday, the Astros’ scheduled matinee against the New York Yankees in the Bronx was postponed.

The teams will make up the game as part of a single-admission Mother’s Day doubleheader Sunday at Yankee Stadium. First pitch of the afternoon game is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The night game is scheduled to begin at the conclusion of the Yankees’ pregame ceremony to honor Derek Jeter but no earlier than 6:35 p.m., the team said.

The Astros, who won the first two games of the four-game set, won’t alter their starting pitching rotation despite the rainout. Mike Fiers will pitch Sunday’s day game opposite Luis Severino, and Charlie Morton will go in the night game opposite Masahiro Tanaka.

Both teams will be able to call up a 26th man from the minor leagues for the night game. The Astros probably will add an extra arm. Righthander Dayan Diaz, their temporary fill-in last weekend when Michael Feliz went on the family medical emergency list, seems the likeliest candidate. Root Sports will broadcast the first game of the doubleheader but not the second, which as previously scheduled will be televised by ESPN. The Jeter No. 2 retirement ceremony will begin no earlier than 5:35 p.m., according to the Yankees.

The decision to postpone Saturday’s game was made well before the teams made their way to Yankee Stadium in the morning. The Yankees’ official Twitter account announced the rainout at 5:28 a.m. local time.

The rainout marked the Astros’ second of the season. They had an April 16 game at Oakland postponed that will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 9 at the Coliseum.
