Manning, who is transgender and transitioned in prison, was convicted in 2013 of 20 charges for giving classified materials to WikiLeaks, one of the largest intelligence exposures in U.S. history. Security concerns have led her and her attorneys to conceal specifics about her release and where she plans to live. The Army considers her on “excess leave,” meaning she is to be considered off-duty, a spokeswoman said. Obama commuted her sentence to about seven years, including the time she served in a lockup between her 2010 arrest and her 2013 conviction. “For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea,” Manning said last week. “Freedom used to be something that I dreamed of but never allowed myself to fully imagine.”
