Arsenal denies Chelsea FA Cup

-

Arsene Wenger’s turbulent year ended with a third FA Cup in four seasons after Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1 at London to deny the English Premier League champion a double.

Wenger became the competition’s most successful manager with a seventh title in his 21-year tenure — triumphs that have papered over some of the cracks as Arsenal repeatedly has come up short in the Premier League and Champions League.

The victory might just be enough to stem the tide of protests against Wenger, with the record 13-time FA Cup winners yet to announce a new contract for the 67-year-old Frenchman for next season. In other news: • Barcelona won the Copa del Rey with a 3-1 victory over Alaves in coach Luis Enrique’s final game with the club. Lionel Messi, Neymar and Paco Alcacer scored in the first half as Barcelona won its third consecutive Copa del Rey title and 29th all-time.

• American midfielder Christian Pulisic was pulled down by goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky midway through the second half, leading to PierreEmerick Aubameyang’s tie-breaking penalty kick that lifted Borussia Dortmund over Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at Berlin for its first German Cup title since 2012.

• Paris Saint-Germain needed an own goal from Angers right back Issa Cissokho in extra time to win the French Cup and end a mediocre season on a high note at the Stade de France. PSG claimed its 11th French Cup and third in a row to surpass Marseille as the club with the most cups.

• Celtic completed a trophy triple and finished the season undefeated in 47 matches after beating Aberdeen 2-1 in the Scottish Cup final thanks to an injury-time goal. Midfielder Tom Rogic scored in the second minute of stoppage time at Hampden Park in Glasgow to give Celtic the Scottish Cup to go along with the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish League Cup.
