Houston Chronicle Sunday

Welcome to the Chronicle 100

- Al Lewis, Business Editor

You can’t know the players without a scorecard, and this is your scorecard. The annual Chronicle 100 section is your handy reference tool gauging the many companies that keep Houston humming. Keep this section in your pile because you’ll likely want to refer to it again as you develop sales leads or look for job openings. If you need to know how our best companies are doing, it’s all right here, from the top publicly traded companies and the top private companies to the area’s top employers.

We call it the Chronicle 100 because, well, there used to be 100 players on this annual list.

Unfortunately, with oil prices well below optimum levels, the economy has been hard on Houston, and not that many companies make the criteria for the list. Last year, economic forces whittled down the 100 to 81 publicly traded companies. And this year it’s 69.

We just don’t want to change the name because we’re optimistic we’ll be back to 100 someday — maybe even next year.

You’ll learn a lot about Houston by perusing the data gathered by S&P Global Market Intelligence and analyzed by our business reporting staff.

Congratulations to all the companies that made the list.
