PATRIOTS OFFENSE

-

Four backs and three receivers have carried the ball at least once in the first two games. The Patriots rank 10th in rushing with 121.5 yards per game, but they average only 3.7 yards per carry. After getting plowed by Jacksonville, the Texans shut down Cincinnati’s running game with terrific tackling. The Patriots don’t have a physical runner who can punish the Texans between the tackles like LeGarrette Blount did last season. The defense has to be prepared for Mike Gillislee, James White, Dion Lewis and possibly Rex Burkhart, who’s been injured. The Patriots will run when the Texans are expecting pass. The defenders have to be disciplined, set the edge, stay in their gaps and not overrun plays. They don’t want to get burned on draw plays. They lead the NFL in total yards as well as in passing yards. Tom Brady averages 341.5 yards per game. He threw for 447 yards and three touchdowns in their victory at New Orleans. The Texans haven’t allowed a 300-yard passer in 31 consecutive games. Brady’s favorite target, tight end Rob Gronkowski, was limited in practice last week. The Texans don’t have anyone who can stick with him in man coverage. Brady throws to his running backs more than any quarterback. James White and Dion Lewis have been productive against the Texans. Brady will throw to his new deep threat, Brandin Cooks, when he can isolate him in man coverage against a cornerback. The receiver who can do the most damage is Chris Hogan, who makes catches all over the field.
