‘GMA’ anchor Amy Robach headlines breast cancer luncheon in The Woodlands
“Every dollar raised stays here locally,” said Cheryl
Brady, In the Pink of Health co-chair.
It’s a good thing, as she and co-chair Tiffany McClung tallied nearly $600,000 during last week’s luncheon at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott — and it all benefited breast and ovarian cancer initiatives in Montgomery Country.
Memorial Hermann’s 17th annual fundraiser left some 1,100 donors and attendees blushing from start to finish. Beyond the hotel ballroom’s fuchsia-washed walls, champagne began flowing promptly at 10 a.m.
The women (and a few good men) munched on panseared chicken and strawberry champagne cake while emcee
Tanji Patton introduced “Giving Back” speaker Mandi
Roach, who was diagnosed with breast cancer one year ago.
“It’s a totally unnatural thing to calculate the age that you can die and have your children safely live on without you,” Roach said, recalling her immediate thoughts after receiving the news.
“Good Morning America” anchor Amy Robach spoke next. The best-selling author shared her gut-wrenching, yet at times hilarious, experiences as she underwent her first-ever mammogram live on the air, then shared her diagnosis of breast cancer and ultimately became an advocate for early-detection education.
“Robin Roberts told me, ‘I know you probably got into this career to have an impact. At least one woman will go in and find out that she has breast cancer because of you,’ ” Robach shared. “I had no idea that the first life I would save would be my own.”
