JAN ADRIENNE HIRST

1949-2017

-

On September 26, 2017 Jan Adrienne Hirst transitioned. She was an Artist, Golfer, Poker Player, Rver, Camper, Fisherwoman, Gardener, and always a surprise. Her gentle spirit will live in and around the many people she loved and who loved her. Some people are born with profound senses and they see and feel the light, the colors, and shapes in a sharp, different, and delicate way. She had an awareness and perception of her surroundings that most of us may miss in life and she captured many of these special senses in her art creations. If you are lucky enough to own one of her paintings, ceramics, paper mache, pen and ink, painted gourds, or other mediums, treasure it because it is the only one in the universe.

As a teenager, Jan moved with her family from Shawnee, Oklahoma to Texas. In Shawnee one of her childhood friends wrote “she graced her life with her laughter, wit, courage, and dear heart. Always one for balancing on the edge, she taught her to live more fearlessly and to savor the fun as we travel our paths.” She spent most of her life in Houston and Wimberley. She also chased her young dreams in San Francisco, New England, and Santa Fe. And of course many of those dreams were her secrets. An ovarian cancer survivor at 33 years of age brought new determination from her wild child days. That new bright light of living onward developed into an overwhelming compassion for people who were just stuck in life. And she would help them if she could. In Houston she leaves many friends in the Montrose, Heights and intercity communities. Always one to “Protest against a Wrong” she would commonly take on causes. Her later years in Wimberley were happy memories of friendship through her Art, Golf, and Community Action. Her golf pals were a special bunch and she always treasured them and the happy times. In all of these places if silliness and laughter was around she probably was the cause and at the heart of it.

She is predeceased by her Mother and Father and special dog “Jodie”. She is survived by her loving sister who was by her side during her final days, and her dog “Sophie”, her special Houston and Cape Cod friends, her Kansas in-law family, and others known and unknown. You know who you are.

And she is survived by her Spouse/Partner of 38 years. “I didn’t want someone who promises me the Moon and the Stars. I want someone who promises to lay on the grass and watch them with me.” Anonymous. What a Life we shared!
