No. 9 Oklahoma overcomes Kansas State in final seconds

-

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Rodney Anderson ran 22 yards for the go-ahead score with 7 seconds remaining, Baker Mayfield threw for 410 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, and No. 9 Oklahoma rallied for a wild 42-35 victory over Kansas State on Saturday night.

Anderson finished with 147 yards rushing for the Sooners (6-1, 3-1 Big 12), who trailed 21-10 at the half.

Kansas State sophomore Alex Delton’s first career touchdown pass with 2:25 left tied it at 35, but Mayfield and Anderson calmly went to work. The two-time Heisman Trophy finalist hit on a series of throws downfield before Anderson took a carry around the left side for the decisive score.

Making his second career start, Delton finished with 161 yards rushing and three TDs while going 12 of 14 for 144 yards through the air. Alex Barnes added 108 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.

It was the Sooners’ nation-leading 14th consecutive true road victory. They haven’t lost to the Wildcats (3-4, 1-3) in their home stadium since 1996. WEST VIRGINIA 38 BAYLOR 36

Xavier Preston sacked Charlie Brewer on a twopoint conversion attempt with 17 seconds left, and the No. 23 Mountaineers withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Bears to escape with a win at Waco.

Will Grier threw for five touchdowns to pad his national lead with 26 for the Mountaineers (5-2, 3-1 Big 12), who led 38-13 at the start of the fourth quarter.

That’s when Brewer entered the game for Baylor and began to turn things around with his scrambling ability. He was 8 for 13 passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns, and fellow freshman Treston Ebner had 109 yards and two touchdowns receiving and a 40-yard scoring run — all in the final quarter.

Ebner’s 9-yard TD catch from Brewer drew Baylor within two, but Preston got immediate pressure on the two-point try and ended Baylor’s chances. Baylor (0-7, 0-4) managed two Connor Martin field goals in the second quarter and got into the end zone for the first time on a 7-yard run from John Lovett in the third .

Baylor quarterback Zach Smith was 16 of 27 for 261 yards. IOWA ST. 31, TEXAS TECH 13

Kyle Kempt threw three touchdown passes, and the Cyclones shut down the nation’s seventh-most productive offense in a convincing win at Lubbock for ISU’s best conference start in 15 seasons and longest road winning streak (three games) since the 1960 campaign.

“As soon as you start buying into every else that everyone wants to say nice about you, bad things happen,” ISU coach Matt Campbell said. “Our fan base is outstanding. I’m so grateful for them that they get the reward of their loyalty over the last couple of years to this football program, but our reward to them is doing a great job finishing the year.”

Iowa State (5-2, 3-1 in the Big 12) held the Red Raiders (4-3, 1-3) to 336 yards, well below Tech’s six-game average of 543 yards.

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury bucked his passing trend through the first half and ran 22 rushing plays for 79 yards against 9 of 11 passing by Nic Shimonek for 18 yards.

The Red Raiders had pulled to within 11 in the second half but Michael Spears’ pick-6 for a 61yard touchdown was a backbreaker. TCU 43, KANSAS 0

Kenny Hill matched his career high with five touchdown passes, KaVontae Turpin returned a punt 90 yards for a score, and the No. 4 Horned defense dominated the Jayhawks at Fort Worth.

The Jayhawks (1-6, 0-4) had 21 yards total offense while tying an 81-year-old NCAA record with their 44th straight loss in a true road game.

With severe weather approaching, both coaches agreed to a running clock from the 12:49 mark of the fourth quarter.

John Diarse had a 67-yard catch-and-run touchdown for a 24-0 lead in the second quarter and finished with 130 yards on four receptions as the Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) improved to 19-0 at home as a top 10 team under coach Gary Patterson.

TCU outgained Kansas 305-3 in the first half. The Jayhawks have lost 47 straight away from home overall since 2009.
