The city of Shenandoah is celebrating its 20th anniversary of the Lighting of the Angels this month with a party to kick-off the holiday season.
Each year, the city’s civic club plans the festive event with food, entertainment, camel rides, Santa Claus and an ice slide in an effort to bring the community together and have “neighbor meet neighbor.”
It’s annual tradition that has been going on since 1997.
Betty Lahiri, civic club president, said this year’s celebration, scheduled for Nov. 28 at the Shenandoah Municipal Building off Interstate 45, will be bigger than ever with between 600 to 800 Shenandoah residents expected to attend.
During the event, children can hop on the one of two camels, play with balloon animals, jump on an ice slide, take pictures with Santa Claus and for the first time ever, interact with a live reindeer.
As its name suggest, the celebration will feature an actual lighting of angels at City Hall and throughout the city.
The yearly event is a way for the city to give back to its community and helps it maintain a “small-town feel,” Larihi said.
“It doesn’t matter where you live (in Shenandoah),” Lahiri said. “Come out and meet your neighbors. We have a lot of seniors who come to socialize. A lot of people come out with their families.”
Shenandoah Mayor Ritch Wheeler commended civic club members on their preparation, and he said he was looking forward to participating in it this year.
“This a great community event,” Wheeler said. “A lot of people come out. Lots of kids. And a lot of love.”
Food, beverages and dessert will be provided.
