Nebraska tops Florida for volleyball title
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mikaela Foecke had 20 kills and hit .250, and Kelly Hunter had 37 assists as fifth-seeded Nebraska defeated No. 2 Florida 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 25-16 to capture the program’s fifth national championship.
The Cornhuskers flipped the script on the defensive-minded Gators, with their suffocating defense leading them to victory. Nebraska allowed Florida to hit just .141 — their lowest hitting percentage of the season — and four Cornhuskers players finished with double-digit digs.
Foecke, who was named the tournament’s co-Most Outstanding Player with Hunter, led the match with her 20 kills on 56 swings. She finished with a semifinal-high total of 39 after posting 19 against Penn State on Thursday.
Kenzie Maloney led Nebraska with 15 digs. She also finished with two kills, despite having had only one across her threeyear career as a starter going into the match.
A crowd of 18,516 packed into the Sprint Center to watch the match, resulting in a sellout and an NCAA record for attendance.
HOCKEY Senators put Canadiens on ice
Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots for his 40th career shutout, leading the Ottawa Senators to a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL 100 Classic outdoor game at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Bobby Ryan and Nate Thompson scored for the Senators, who have consecutive wins for the first time in more than a month.
The temperature at puck drop was about 12 degrees. Despite the frigid temperature, a crowd of 33,959 filled the stands at TD Place for the first outdoor game for the current Ottawa franchise. The game was part of the NHL’s 100th anniversary celebration. SOCCER Ronaldo leads Madrid to title
Cristiano Ronaldo scored on a free kick, and Real Madrid claimed its third Club World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Brazilian team Gremio at Abu Dhabi.
The Ballon d’Or winner fired his right-footed shot between two players in Gremio’s defensive wall, leaving goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe no hope of reaching the ball before it bounced inside the post in the 53rd minute.
Madrid became the first team to retain its Club World Cup title and collected its fifth trophy of 2017, along with the Champions League, Spanish league, European Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup.
Madrid equaled Barcelona’s record of three titles for the short knockout tournament between the champions of FIFA’s six continental confederations and the host nation’s league winner.
GOLF Cabreras’ play good for lead
Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera and Angel Cabrera Jr. birdied their last three holes for a 13-under-par 59 to take a one-stroke lead in the PNC Father-Son Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
Cabrera, a Masters and U.S. Open champion, is making his debut in this popular 36-hole scramble.
“We combined very well,” Cabrera said. “When I hit a bad shot, he hit a good one. That’s the key.”
They had a one-shot lead over Mark O’Meara and Shaun O’Meara, who are playing for the first time. That included a birdie on the last hole, which O’Meara attributed to the strength of his son.
“My little man hit it 58 yards by me on the 18th,” said O’Meara, the Masters and British Open champion in 1998. “It’s a little easier coming in with a 6-iron.”
Defending champions David Duval and Nick Karavites rallying over the back nine at the RitzCarlton Golf Club for a 61. They are trying to become the first father-son team to repeat as winners since Bernhard and Stefan Langer in 2006. Larry Nelson won two years in a row in 2007 and 2008, but with different sons.
