Baylor defeats UT; Kansas fends off No. 16 TCU

-

WACO — Jo Lual-Acuil and Manu Lecomte each had 17 points, and Baylor beat Texas 69-60 on Saturday to avoid an 0-3 start in Big 12 Conference play.

The Bears (11-4, 1-2 Big 12) led for good after Lecomte made a 3-pointer just more than three minutes into the second half to break a 44-all tie. Lecomte, who made only four of 22 shots the first two Big 12 games, leaned back with both feet on the ground while watching the shot go through the rim.

Jase Febres led the Longhorns (10-5, 1-2) with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. But all of the freshman’s scoring came before halftime, and he missed all five shots after that. Mohamed Bamba had 15 points and nine rebounds.

Texas was within 63-60 when the 6-11 Bamba made a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5:03 left. The Longhorns did not score again, and all of Baylor’s points after that came on six free throws. KANSAS 88, TCU 84

Devonte Graham scored 28 points with eight consecutive free throws in the final 2:02 as the No. 10 Jayhawks held on for a victory over the 16th-ranked Horned Frogs at Fort Worth.

Vladimir Brodziansky had eight consecutive points for TCU to tie the game at 77 before Marcus Garrett’s two tiebreaking free throws put Kansas ahead to stay with three minutes left. Graham then made all of his free throws down the stretch for the Jayhawks (12-3, 2-1 Big 12).

Brodziansky led the Horned Frogs (13-2, 1-2) with 20 points. TEXAS TECH 74, KANSAS ST. 58

Keenan Evans scored 27 points, and the No. 18 Red Raiders beat the Wildcats at Lubbock to back up that big win at Kansas earlier in the week.

Texas Tech (14-1, 3-0 Big 12) led throughout against Kansas State, like it has in all of its conference games. That includes the 85-73 victory at Allen Fieldhouse four days earlier — the only time the Red Raiders have won there.

Texas Tech is one of only two Big 12 teams to make it through the first three conference games without a loss. No. 6 West Virginia is the other.

By shooting 70 percent in the first half, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 20-4 lead and settled for a 40-22 advantage at the break. SAM HOUSTON ST. 85 INCARNATE WORD 74

Marcus Harris scored 16 points, and the Bearkats handed the host Cardinals their fifth consecutive loss at San Antonio.

John Dewey III added 13 points with eight assists for Sam Houston State (8-8, 2-1 Southland Conference).

Charles Brown III scored 21 points for Incarnate Word (5-8, 0-3). CENTRAL ARKANSAS 100 LAMAR 91

Colton Weisbrod scored a career-high 38 points while pulling down 11 rebounds for Lamar (10-7, 2-2 Southland). NICHOLLS ST. 72 HOUSTON BAPTIST 71
