There are great reasons for a kitchen remodel

- By Dan Bawden

Ready to remodel your kitchen? Here are some good reasons why you should go ahead and plan the project:

• Style: You want your kitchen to reflect your style. You deserve it. You enjoy beautiful things and appreciate good design. Designers can work with you and your remodeler to identify your style and sort through the extensive array of materials and finishes to design a kitchen that uniquely expresses you and your taste. If your designer uses “virtual” drawing software you can visualize your project in 3D and in color, you will know what your kitchen is going to look like — before any construction is done.

• Interaction: A newly designed kitchen can increase your interaction with others. When you open up the kitchen to other rooms, such as family rooms, you won’t feel isolated when preparing meals. You can be in your kitchen and still be part of the action. A new island can be a comfortable place for late-night chats with teens. It’s no wonder the kitchen is called the “heart of the home.”

• Function: You want a kitchen that works well for you and your family. The reasons are individual, but may include room for two cooks, a computer station or a walk-in pantry. Are you left-handed or righthanded? Are there two cooks or one? These are things to think about when embarking on a kitchen remodel. Your remodeler and designer should create a kitchen that addresses your needs and complements your lifestyle — and cooking style.

• Storage and organization: A well-designed kitchen remodel can greatly increase your storage space and ability to keep organized. Ask your remodeler to incorporate the right mix of Universal Design storage solutions that are uniquely important to you and your family — such as lots of full extension drawers and great under-cabinet LED task lighting.

• Entertaining: Many people love entertaining, but find that everyone always ends up in their too small kitchen. If your kitchen is too small, an addition will make a world of difference. If the kitchen has a poor layout, you may be able to remodel within the existing footprint to achieve your goals. You’ll be excited to entertain and show off your beautiful new kitchen.

• Resale value :According to Realtors, the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house for potential buyers. A beautiful kitchen can often mean the difference between a quick sale and a home that lingers on the market. In this area, Remodeling Magazine’s 2017 Cost vs. Value Report shows that a kitchen remodel can return 56 percent for a major kitchen remodel and 83 percent of a minor kitchen remodel of its cost upon resale.

• Safety: Unfortunately, many household accidents occur in the kitchen. You can upgrade the safety of this much-used room to reduce the risks of accidents and make it as safe as possible. For example, our kitchen designer can discuss layouts with you that will lessen the risk of bumping into others with hot food or water. Countertop heights can be modified to reduce back strain. Non-slip, attractive floor materials. Green materials can be utilized to improve indoor air quality.
