-

Daniel Joseph “Rusty” Staub, also known as “Le Grande Orange”, was called to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, March 28, 2018 at the age of 73. Rusty was born April 1, 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended St Cecelia Grammar School and Jesuit High School in New Orleans. He broke into the majors at the age of 19 with the Houston Colt 45’s and finished his career with the New York Mets in 1985 at the age of 41. Rusty became a huge hit with baseball fans in two countries during an All-Star career that spanned 23 Major League seasons from 1963-1985. Rusty devoted his retirement years doing charitable work. In 1985 he created the New York Police and Fire Widow’s and Children’s Benefit Fund, dedicated to supporting the families of New York City’s first responders who have been killed in the line of duty, through lifelong financial assistance and a network of support. Also, the Rusty Staub Foundation has supported the Catholic Charities approach to address hunger in the New York City metropolitan area over the past 10 years. Rusty will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Staub Sr., and his mother, Alma Morton Staub. He is survived by his brother Raymond “Chuck” Staub, Jr (Sandra), his sister Sally Johnston, and his sister Susan Tully (Jerry). Rusty is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Rusty’s family and friends would like to invite you to attend his memorial service on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Buffalo Speedway at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New York Police and Fire Widow’s and Children’s Benefit Fund, the Rusty Staub Foundation, or any other charity of your choice.
