To eat or not to eat— meat

- Daniel Acker / Bloomberg

Solid science

Regarding “Beef lovers call bull on meatless edict ” (Page A1, Thursday), it wasn’t mentioned how much of the $8.7 billion that beef and cattle contribute to the state’s gross domestic product is erased by the increased human medical costs that beef and cattle create. And no mention about how much it costs to raise crops to feed cattle and then eat the cattle rather than just eating the crops directly. And no mention about how much it costs to deal with the greenhouse gases that cattle produce.

There is a lot of good science that has already answered the above questions, but unfortunately, almost none of it gets through to the average person, who mostly hears stories that come from people and organizations with vested interests.

No doubt there will be major push-back against We Work for not serving beef, pork or chicken at work events, not buying meat dishes for its members, and not letting employees expense meals containing meat. And I suspect that one part of the push-back will be that one needs to eat meat to get enough protein. The irony is that for the same number of calories, plant based foods typically have just as much protein as those that are animalbased without the associated fat and cholesterol. But as the great scientist Francis Bacon (no pun intended) said, ”Man prefers to believe what he prefers to be true.” Joe Vogt, Houston

Ridiculous

Regarding your story on the new company policy at We Work, under which they will not serve meat at any of their functions, nor will they reimburse employees for their meals that contain meat —- I’m wondering if they will publish a list of CEO approved consumables? Can employees have Brussels sprouts or are they less nutritious than kale, so they are not approved? I’m assuming anything besides water will not be acceptable, certainly no soda.

I’m all for being environmentally-responsible, but this is ridiculous. What arrogance — I will decide what’s best for you little people. Hey, the company can make whatever policy it wants to, but if I were one of their employees, I couldn’t get out of there fast enough! Bob Fowler, Point Blank
