ROYAL WALKER MOORE

1938-2018

-

Royal Walker Moore, “Roy or RW,” passed away on August 13, 2018, in Houston, Texas at the age of 79. He was born on October 14, 1938 in Navasota, Texas. He attended Navasota High School where he played football and served as President of his senior class. After graduation in 1956, he attended Southern Methodist University, pledged Phi Delta Theta and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. After college, Roy returned to Navasota to join his family’s cotton farming and cattle ranching business and was a proud member of The Sons of the Republic of Texas. He then moved to Houston in 1971 after pursuing a law degree at South Texas College of Law. Roy had a long and successful career in Family Law where he was a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and was named one of “The Best Lawyers in America” for numerous years.

Roy will always be remembered for his Texas-Size courtroom personality, always being a man of his word, where his hand shake was his bond and his collection of over 6,000 toy soldiers. While RW had strong and sometimes contrarian opinions, he was fiercely loyal to family, friends and his love for the “finer things in life” as well as a good pair of suspenders. When he put his mind to do something, he did it – like completing the Houston Marathon in 1986. He was a longtime member of River Oaks Country Club and a voracious reader. Later in his career, he loved practicing law with his son Roy L. at Moore & Moore, LLP.

In true RW fashion, he was known and loved by his grandchildren as “Big Daddy.”

Roy was pre-deceased by his parents, Clarence and Massey, and his sister, Clare Moore Stanton Crocket. He is survived by his son, Roy L. Moore and wife Jenny; his stepdaughter Shannon Bristow Newsom and husband Andrew of Dallas; his former wives, Pene Pettit Moore and Jane Bristow Moore; and his beloved grandchildren, Molly and Walker Moore, and Cooper and Susanna Newsom. He will be missed by all.

Roy will be remembered in a private ceremony in Houston with a later graveside service in Navasota. We will always honor him as our friend, father, colleague and grandfather. All will agree that “they broke the mold after him…”

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Roy W. Moore to South Texas College of Law Houston Advocacy Program, 1303 San Jacinto in Houston, Texas 77002.
