Zappe puts zip into offense as HBU staggers SW Baptist

Bailey Zappe threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns as Houston Baptist opened the season with a 49-7 win over Division II Southwest Baptist on Saturday night at Husky Field.

Dreshawn Minnieweat­her broke for a 42-yard score in the first quarter before the teams endured a weather delay that lasted over two hours. The Huskies got right back to it after the delay, scoring 21 more points in the first half. Minnieweat­her finished with 96 yards.

Zappe connected with nine Husky receivers with LaDarius Dickens hauling in three for 50 yards and one score. Nick Sexton grabbed six for 48 yards.

The HBU defense had a fruitful night picking off four passes and gathering in a fumble.

LAMAR 70, KY. CHRISTIAN 7

Eight players scored touchdowns as the Cardinals overwhelme­d the visiting Knights with their fifth-best point total in school history.

NORTH TEXAS 46, SMU 23

The Mustangs’ 23-point fourth quarter couldn’t undo the offensive damage orchestrat­ed by Mean Green quarterbac­k Mason Fine at Denton.

Fine completed 40 of 50 passes for 444 yards and three TDs. Thirteen players caught passes.

RUTGERS 35, TEXAS ST. 7

Raheem Blackshear and Jonathan Hilliman had two touchdowns apiece to lead the host Scarlet Knights past the Bobcats.

N. ARIZONA 30, UTEP 10

Case Cookus and Emmanuel Butler combined on two touchdowns as the Lumberjack­s continued the host Miners’ winless streak from last season.

UTEP opened its 101st football season under new coach Dana Dimel,who coached at Houston from 2000-02.

The Miners last won a game when they rolled over North Texas in the 2016 season finale.
